Lycamobile Guide: Choosing a SIM Plan for Cheap International Calls

Lycamobile is a mobile virtual network operator best known for low-cost international calling. It is popular with people who regularly call family and friends abroad, students, and anyone who wants a flexible SIM without a long contract.

Here is how to pick a plan that actually fits the way you use your phone.

Start with how you call

Look at your last few months of usage. How many minutes do you spend on international calls, and to which countries? Lycamobile bundles typically include a set amount of international minutes to selected destinations, so check that the countries you call most are covered before you choose.

Data versus minutes

• If you mostly use Wi-Fi at home and work, a smaller data allowance may be enough.
• If you use video calls or maps on the go, prioritise data over extra minutes.
• App-based calling uses data, while bundle minutes do not — balance the two.

Free SIM and keeping your number

Lycamobile offers SIM cards that you can order online and activate with a bundle. If you are switching from another network, you can usually keep your existing number by requesting a transfer code from your old provider and giving it to Lycamobile during setup. Check the current process on the official site before you start.

Avoid surprise charges

Calls to numbers outside your bundle, or after your bundle runs out, can be charged at standard rates. Set up auto-renew only if you want it, keep an eye on remaining allowances in the app, and read the fair-use terms for any "unlimited" allowances.
