SmallRig Buying Guide: Cages, Rigs and Accessories for Creators

SmallRig makes camera cages, handles, mounts, plates and lighting accessories for photographers and video creators. Its modular approach means you can start with a few pieces and expand the rig as your work grows.

Start with a cage

A camera-specific cage protects your body and gives you mounting points for everything else. Choose a cage made for your exact camera model so ports, batteries and screens remain accessible. Phone creators can start with a phone cage or video kit instead.

Add what you actually need

• Top handle for low-angle and handheld shots.
• Side handle for a steadier grip during long takes.
• Cold shoe mounts for a microphone or light.
• Quick-release plates to move between tripod, gimbal and handheld fast.

Plan for power and audio

Longer shoots often need external power and better sound. Plan where a power bank, monitor and microphone will sit before buying mounts so cables stay tidy and the rig stays balanced.

Buy in stages

Kits bundle popular combinations and can cost less than buying pieces individually. If you are unsure, start with the cage and one handle, shoot with it for a few weeks, and add parts based on what slowed you down.
